Valentine's Day can be quite contentious - some see it as a celebration of love while some consider it a pure marketing gimmick to rake in the $$$. Being a foodie, I see it as a good reason to enjoy a nice meal with my loved one. This year, we decided to head to Feringgi Grill, Penang's longest surviving Grillroom.
Located on the mezzanine floor of Shangri-La's Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa, the red brick walls and polished wooden ceilings provide a warm & cosy interior.

The menu is updated frequently so you can check it out in advance online to avoid disappointment. Service is highly attentive & personal, as expected of this type of establishment.
After placing our orders, we're served an assortment of bread. Nothing special but it's always nice to enjoy some freshly baked bread with a nice pat of salted butter.

Soon after, we're served a seared tuna steak Amuse-bouche. A nice and light bite to further whet our appetite!

Our appetisers arrived as soon as they cleared our table - talk about a well-timed service.
Let's makan!
Lobster Bisque (4.5/5)
Creamy and velvety, it had so much sweetness from the lobster and a tinge of brightness from the acidic tomato base. One of the better lobster bisques that I've enjoyed in Malaysia.

Hokkaido Scallops (4/5)
The fresh Hokkaido scallops were seared beautifully and paired well with the Sevruga Caviar - it was like taking a bite of the ocean! My only complaint would be the small portion size. It felt a bit too small even for an appetiser.

Before our mains arrived, we're served a raspberry sorbet palate cleanser. Cold, sweet and berry-refreshing!

Wagyu Prime Rib Cooked on the Bone - King's Cut (5/5)
Only available on Fridays and Saturdays, we decided to try their largest cut of Wagyu Prime Rib. One of those "go big or go home" days.

The steak looked extremely juicy and upon slicing, it was the perfect medium doneness as requested. At 350g, the portion is probably large enough for two small eaters, especially if you order a couple of carb-heavy sides. While we're offered several spoons of mustard-based sauces on the side, we thought the natural juiciness of the steak paired best with the red wine sauce.

Not a huge fan of the Yorkshire pudding the steak was served with. It was crunchy and mildly fatty but a touch too salty for my liking. Midway through the meal, we're also offered some complimentary potato gratin and peas and carrots.

Seasonal Mushrooms (4.5/5) We also ordered a side of seasonal mushrooms. If I recall correctly, it's a medley of king trumpet mushrooms, shiitake mushrooms, and beech mushrooms served with shallots and chives. The charred and buttery flavours complement the steak.

Mallard Duck Breast (3.5/5)
This was probably my least favourite dish of the evening. The duck was tender but the red wine berry sauce wasn't exceptionally memorable. The fondant potato and asparagus were tasty but I didn't care much for the raisins as a garnish. Also with just two relatively thin slices of duck breast, I find the portion too small for a main course.

Overall, it's a great place to celebrate special occasions. I was particularly impressed by the steak and would return just for that. The portion size for the other dishes was quite small - if not for the massive steak, I might still be slightly hungry. Prices are definitely steep but you are getting a great dining experience from the nice ambience and team of attentive servers. Worth mentioning that no F.O.C. table water is served and each bottle of Evian water costs RM32 - perhaps it's worth checking out the wine and cocktail menu if you enjoy drinking!
