Hon Kee Porridge @ Petaling Street, KL

I love a comforting bowl of thick rice porridge for breakfast. Hon Kee Porridge came up as one of the most recommended establishments for porridge in KL so off I went!

Located in the heart of Petaling Street, Hon Kee has been in business for 73 years. You can easily spot their bright red banner outside their stall.

The number of seats are quite limited so there was already a small queue at around 9am. Thankfully we didn't have to wait too long as their servers were highly efficient in serving food and clearing tables.

Let's makan!

Fresh Raw Fish Porridge (4.5/5)

No, it's not porridge with a side of sashimi! The slices of raw snakehead fish are meant to be dipped in the hot bowl of porridge to "cook". The sweetness of the fresh fish paired with a drizzle of sesame oil, slivers of ginger and a dash of white pepper perfectly complements the smooth bowl of porridge. Simple and delicious.

Crispy Innards Porridge (4/5)

This porridge was generously topped with thin slices of pig's heart & tongue and fried intestines. No foul odour for the innards but I'd have preferred for the intestines to be lighter & crispier.

Secret Recipe Sauce Rice Noodle (4.5/5)

Smooth pieces of Chee Cheong Fun slathered in their secret sweet sauce. For someone who's not really a fan of Chee Cheong Fun, I enjoyed this! The sauce wasn't too "jelak" and the Chee Cheong Fun was light as well. Could have easily devoured this as a snack.

We also enjoyed the porridge with a side of roast duck we bought from Sze Ngan Chye Roast Duck Stall. Would highly recommend this if you're craving a heavy breakfast!

Overall, it's a traditional no-frills establishment offering a limited but well-loved menu. Some might claim that the porridge is overrated but I love the simple "kochabi" flavours. Hygiene could definitely be improved so be prepared for a roadside hawker dining experience. Make sure to come early to avoid the crowds!
