Hotel Foosusan @ Parit Buntar, Perak

For a relatively small town, surprisingly Parit Buntar has quite a few beef noodle shops. And Hotel Foosusan is my favourite of the lot so far.

The shop is easy to spot in front of a roundabout

The stall is located in an old hotel near the Kerian river (hence the odd name for a beef noodle stall). The restaurant's interior is extremely clean. We're talking about glistening wall tiles and dust-free fans that might even put the cleanliness of my room to shame.

No complicated choices to be made for your beef noodle order here. All you need to decide on is the portion size (big or small) and what noodles you'd like (cintan mee/instant noodles and flat rice noodles/hor fun seems to be the most popular choices). But of course, if you don't like beef offals you can request a beef-only bowl.

The boss shares that they've been in business for close to 40 years, using the same authentic recipe well-loved by locals.

Food takes less than 5 minutes to arrive, which is very good news for my hungry tummy in the morning.

Let's makan!

Beef Hor Fun Soup (4/5)

Compared to the HK style or Hainanese beef noodles, this version features a very clear soup - so clear that it looks more like pork noodles at first glance! But clear soup does not mean bland soup. It packs a strong beef aroma which is complemented by the touch of garlic oil and cilantro. Since it's not cloudy at all, you can devour the whole bowl of soup for breakfast without feeling "heavy".

Toppings-wise, they include raw beef slices, beef tripe, beef tendon, and beef liver. The offals are well prepared and have no off-putting odour. My favourite would be the raw beef slices which add so much sweetness as they cook in the hot bowl of soup (similar to what you'd get in a bowl of Vietnamese Beef Pho). Not to mention that they also come out perfectly tender!

Make sure to also order their old-school iced kopi-o (traditional coffee without sugar or milk) and toast to enjoy with your beef noodles. I can't remember the exact price but I believe it was around RM5 for all three.

The toast could use a bit more butter but the homemade kaya really hits the spot

Overall, it's a good place to enjoy a light bowl of beef noodles for breakfast. The price is highly reasonable for the amount & quality of toppings served. Not forgetting the friendly service from aunties and uncles, and the charming old-school environment (minus the grime!).

Make sure to arrive early (9am is good) to avoid disappointment, they close once sold out. If you have trouble waking up early, a glass of iced cold kopi-o really helps!
