Scarborough Fish & Chips @ Tanjung Rhu, Langkawi

[Pork Free]

While exploring the northern side of Langkawi island, we stumbled upon this fish and chip shop in Tanjung Rhu. Reviews on Google seemed promising and my tummy was in agreement that some food wouldn't hurt after a morning of exploring.

Huge signboard caught our attention

I hope koi fish & chips are not on the menu
We opted to sit under the shade as it was a blazing hot afternoon
The view definitely adds to the dining experience

Upon seating, the waiter was quick to hand us the menus but wasn't particularly chatty or friendly. He did seem efficient in serving customers though.

Quite a small & focused Western menu

Despite some reviews citing slow service, our food arrived within a quick 10 minutes.

Let's makan!

Fish & Chips (4.5/5)

Of course, when visiting a fish & chip shop, you order fish & chips to evaluate the quality of the food. Visually it looks great - the salad adds a pop of green to the golden bed of fish & chips. The beautiful golden hue and "light" deep-fried aroma suggest that fresh cooking oil was used.

While the Barramundi fillet used was likely frozen, it still tasted pretty fresh. I particularly enjoyed the light and crispy batter that paired well with the tangy tartar sauce. Not forgetting the deliciously crispy thick-cut chips that were not greasy at all.

Crispy on the outside, flaky on the inside

Deep Fried Snow Fish (4.5/5)

Compared to the Barramundi fillet, this Snow Fish has an oilier taste that might be a tad too rich for some. As a precaution, we asked to replace the chips with more salad to avoid food coma as we had more exploring to do.

The meat has a large, thick flake and since it was cooked right, it offered a lovely melt-in-your-mouth texture. Again, the fish used was likely frozen but it fares pretty well in terms of freshness!

Perfectly cooked!

Overall, this place was a good find. The fish & chips are one of the best that I've tried in Malaysia - crispy, flaky and not at all greasy, even when enjoyed on such a hot afternoon! Service was efficient and neither friendly nor rude. Prices might be slightly premium but I find it reasonable for the food quality and scenic beachfront views. Perhaps the only downside is the location, the shop is likely out of the way unless you're planning to visit Tanjung Rhu during your next Langkawi trip.
